Epimedium 'Sulphureum'

With this beautiful Epimedium 'Sulphureum' perennial comes early, delicate-looking colour—yet the plant itself is hardy and tough. It grows to just around 30cm in height, and forms a mound of heart-shaped leaves. These emerge red-flushed in spring, then mature to pale green; then they turn reddish in the autumn. This Epimedium is semi-evergreen—meaning that in a mild winter it will hold onto many of its leaves. Its spring flowers, which are held well above the foliage, are of a gorgeous two-tone primrose- and sulphur-yellow, and are carried in loose, open sprays. 

Epimedium × versicolor 'Sulphureum' is a delight in any garden situation, although its natural home is woodland, and even areas of quite dense shade. It is an excellent choice for ground-cover, and is well suited to many different garden situations, including dry sites. It is absolutely one of the best forms of Epimedium, and has been recognised as such, by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) giving it an Award of Garden Merit.
